Pellet fuel is made from readily available sawdust, a by-product of the forestry industry, which is compressed, into pellets, slightly larger than rabbit food. Because the pellets contain about five times less water than cord wood, they burn clean (safer with no Creosote deposits) and have predictable heat performance levels (8500btu/lb) depending on the setting, enough to heat an entire home of up to 2,000 square feet. In fact, the use of pellet fuel is considered to be Green House Gas neutral, (does not contribute to global warming) so you'll be doing the environment a favor at the same time.
Pellet fuel is available just about everywhere. There are about 750,000 tons of wood pellets manufactured at over 70 plants located through out North America and are available in 40lb bags, sold through specialty hearth products shops, mass merchants, farm and garden supply retailers and hardware stores.
Pellet fuel prices have not significantly increased in over 10 years. Unlike other forms of non-renewable energy, pellet fuel prices are stable and the supply chain reliable, while Oil and Gas prices are tied to supply and demand and the whim of foreign Governments.
